The Armenian leader paid an official visit to the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, called Republic of Artsakh after the referendum of 2017 on 01 September 2017. President Sargsyan’s visit came on the 26th anniversary of Stepanakert’s declaration of independence in 1991 during a full-scale war with neighbouring Azerbaijan. Sargsyan met with high level officials in Stepanakert including the de facto Republic’s President Bako Sahakyan, Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan as well as religious and military leaders. The delegation from Yerevan attended several high-profile events in the midst of independence day celebrations in the country.
