Prisoners swapped between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Yesterday, a prisoner swap took place between Armenia and Azerbaijan through means of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in what was a rare development possibly aimed strengthening confidence building between the Armenian and Azeri sides.

Officials in Baku agreed on returning 45-year-old Zaven Karapetyan, who, according to Armenian reports had accidentally crossed into Azerbaijan from the northeastern region of Tavush in June of 2017, while their counterparts in Yerevan  agreed on returning Elvin Ibrahimov, who in March of this year was shot and wounded by Armenian troops while apparently trying to cross the border, and subsequently taken in by Armenia.

The two individuals were swapped with ICRC acting as an intermediary.
