Karabakh Defence Ministry releases 2019 summary

De facto Nagorno Karabakh’s (NK) Defence Ministry released an official summary of the military situation of 2019, which stressed the past years major events and developments, as well as underlined the lack of progress with the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group due to disagreements amongst the parties in the conflict.

The major military highlights for 2019 as mentioned by the Defence ministry were the following:

  • During the year, 9,000 ceasefire violation cases were registered, with approximately 85,000 projectiles fired at military positions.
  • Ceasefire violations were mainly reported with small arms, however in March and June, 60mm mortar shells were reported fired, and in June, grenade launchers were used (1, 2, 3).
  • 2019 saw the lowest number of reported ceasefire violations since 2010.

According to the statement, military intrusions consisting of mainly diversionary and covert operations have significantly decreased due to ongoing renovations on military outposts as well as the continuing installation of observation devises. The only intrusion attempt on Armenian trenches in 2019 was reported on 22 September at 16.15 hours near the abandoned village of Qaraxanbeyli, on the southern segment of the line-of-contact near Fuzuli, which left one Azeri serviceman dead.
