Rare official statement: Azeri soldier killed

On 15 February, Azeri Defence officials announced in a rare statement about the death of serviceman Seymur Alaskerov as a result of cross border fire. The exact location was not officially announced, with the statement stating an area near the “frontline” (sic), which could include not only the line-of-contact between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan, but also the officially-recognised border that the latter shares with Armenia.

Alaskerov, born in 1990, was from the city of Ganja (former Kirovabad). He was laid to rest in his native city according to social media. No further details were provided on open sources.

The news comes on the same day that Azeri President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minsiter Nikol Pashinyan participated in the first ever face-to-face debate in the city of Munich, Germany. Information about military losses is strictly controled in Azerbaijan, and despite news of periodic deaths in the country’s armed forces, official statements on such events are rare, with the last one made on 19 June 2019, and previous to that on 19 January 2018.
